While many beachgoers flock to Manly, Palm Beach and Curl Curl for beautiful water and sand, there is another fantastic swim spot hidden in the northern beaches: Dee Why. While it might not be as well known as its close neighbours, Dee Why beach has a lot to offer those who make the trek down from the city. The beach is gorgeous and quiet during the week, but on weekends it gets busy with families and locals enjoying their weekend getaway.
The 1.2km stretch of sand up to Long Reef is large enough for everyone to space out and have a patch of sand to themselves.
There's enough sand for sunbaking, building sandcastles and flying kites. The shallow waters are perfect for young kids to play in the waves and there is even a large walled bath area behind the famous point break.
Dee Why is about 20 km from the CBD, which can take over an hour to get to outside peak hour.
In between cooling off with a quick dip, the best thing to do on a sunny day elsewhere on the northern beaches is to stop at a cafe and enjoy the ocean views. Dee Why's beachside cafe strip along Pittwater Road is dotted with cool cafes and restaurants to sit out at while enjoying the pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.
The Dee Why RSL is probably the most popular nightspot in the area complete with pokies and numerous food options.
Dee Why is serviced by two local shopping malls within walking distance of Pittwater Road. Nearby Warringah Mall in Brookvale has all the major department stores as well as boutique shopping chains. It is also home to a large cinema and entertainment precinct.
Dee Why is popular with both locals and tourists alike, so the restaurants are often packed on weekends.
Nevertheless, keep an eye out for some of Dee Why's hidden treasures; there are plenty of great little cafes tucked away up the side streets which offer fantastic food at reasonable prices. There are also many beachside cafes.
Some of these include:
Seachange Cafe 3/20 The Strand, Dee Why
There is a dedicated Surf Life Saving Club at Dee Why which should be included in your list of things to see and do when visiting Dee Why Beach. The club's team of dedicated volunteers patrol the beach during summer to make sure everyone has an enjoyable day.
Surfing schools are really popular on the southern end of Dee Why beach, known to local's as "Kiddie's Corner".
Yes, just over the road from Dee Why Beach is the
Long Reef Golf Club. The Golf Course runs along the northern part of Dee Why beach and offers a picturesque 18-hole course with stunning views of Dee Why beach.
There is an excellent kids' recreation area complete with a large playground, BBQs and picnic tables. There are ocean baths and a dedicated seating area with great views of Pittwater.
Some of Dee Why's best cafes are only a stone's throw away from the beach, whilst others are a stroll along suburban streets to get to the main commercial strip near Pittwater Road.
Dee Why is around 30km from Sydney's international and domestic airports. It will take you around 45 minutes to get there by car and over an hour to get there during peak hours.
There are plenty of activities to get involved in around Dee Why Beach including surfing lessons, surf life saving, swimming, playing at the playground or just relaxing on the white sands. There are also great cafes nearby too which will give you a break from the sun and a chance to take in some fresh sea air.
