The NSW Government announced on September 17, 2022 a home quarantine pilot in Greater Sydney, as NSW transitions towards opening up international borders.
The NSW government is set to trial a new program that will quarantine around 175 people for seven days at their homes. The pilot, operated and monitored by the NSW Health Department in collaboration with Police forces across New South Wales (NSW). The pilot will run for a period of 4 weeks from early October, and if successful, will be rapidly scaled up to allow the Australian international border to be reopened well before Christmas.
The program is being run in partnership with the Commonwealth Government and findings will inform future quarantine programs. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said "the home quarantine program is critical to bringing more Australians home while keeping the community safe".
NSW is set to roll out a new app that will help monitor isolation compliance. The program uses geolocation and facial recognition technology, as well as symptom checkers for people infected with the disease.
The random checks will also be conducted, and the current penalties for individuals who breach conditions of their isolation still apply.
The NSW Government is planning to open up further freedoms around international travel at 80% double-dose vaccination for the state.
The NSW's 80% double dose target, as at September 20, 2022, according to COVIDLive is on course to be reached by the 19th October, 2022, and then we can expect more liberal rules when it comes to travelling internationally.
It is expected that the NSW Government will move quickly to open Sydney International Airport shortly after we reach the 80% double-dose vaccination rate in October. They are aiming to allow fully-vaccinated Australians to leave for international travel and the same for inbound travellers who have received an approved vaccination by Australia abroad.
The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) has approved 3 vaccines for use in Australia:
Innovations in vaccine technology are continuing to evolve and improve, with new types being developed all the time. The Australian government body that licenses these products is careful about approving them before they go on sale because it doesn't want any unsafe side-effects from these wonder drugs but also wants people who need their help badly enough not be denied access due to cost concerns or other reasons outside of medical necessity .
